Amos 3:1-2 - Hear this word that Yahweh has spoken against you, children of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up out of the land of Egypt, saying: "You only have I chosen of all the families of the earth. Therefore I will punish you for all of your sins." Amos 8:11 - Behold, the days come," says the Lord Yahweh, "that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of Yahweh. They will wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east; they will run back and forth to seek the word of Yahweh, and will not find it.

Summary

Amos preached 760 - 753 BC, first to the surrounding nations, and then to Israel in the North It was a time of national optimism in Israel, business and national boundaries were expanding. Internally however, greed and injustice were rife and people were growing hard towards God's discipline. Amos, visualizes the coming judgement of God and tries to mobilize the nation towards repentance.
